What To pack

Your bag is as important as the contents

Space is limited, so no hard sided luggage.  Whatever you bring, pack it into a bag you'll use during the trip, like a backpack or a bag that folds down very small.

Pack in layers

This is not a time to pull together multiple outfits.  Mix and match items that can be reworn.  Pinterest is a great resource for packing lists.

Bedding

We provide sheets, blankets and pillows.   If you require a pillowy top to nod off to sleep, the bed in the van is quite firm, so a sleeping pad, or even a pillow top mattress cover, can make your nights a bit more comfortable.  If you sleep fine in a tent on the ground, you'll be cozy in the van.  If you're a hot sleeper, here are

5 tips for staying cool in our campervan:

  1. Run the ceiling fan at night
  2. Put up the window covers day or night
  3. Avoid running high capacity electronics, like laptops
  4. Stay hydrated
  5. Park in the shade

Eating

Birdie comes fully stocked with plates, bowls, cutlery, pots/pans, french press and more.  After you pick up your van and before you head off on the road, you’ll want to stop at a grocery store to stock up on your food essentials. You may not know what you’ll want to eat each day or what is feasible to cook in your campervan. Planning your grocery list ahead will help you breeze through the grocery store and get on the road to start your adventure.  And remember, you can never have enough water!

We provide two options for cooking, depending on the style of camping you'll be doing.  If you'll have access to power, we'll include the induction cooktop.  If you're going "off grid" we'll send you with a propane cooktop for outdoor use.  The reason we do this is to preserve as much battery as we can.

Other Essentials

  • Bath and Beach Towels.
  • Bug spray: The beautiful summer weather also brings with it many insects that can make thick wooded areas and wet regions unbearable at times without the proper insect repellent.
  • Sun screen: You should be wearing sunscreen any time you are spending extensive time in the sun, but especially while you are spending entire days outside hiking and camping. Make sure to apply it effectively!
  • Personal Water Bottle:  Stay hydrated!
  • Camera: Your cell phone is great, but it’s always fun to record your journey on a digital camera with a more advanced sensor, or even on film.
  • Hand sanitizer: Never underestimate the importance of hand sanitizer. Like with your first aid kit, bring a small bottle to take on the trail and a larger one to leave at the van.
  • Lighter or matches: If you’re parked at place that allows campfires, definitely don’t forget this so you can enjoy some s’mores
  • Games: Playing cards, cribbage, dice, and any other fun games to play and stay disconnected from your phone.
  • Headlamp or flashlight: You’ll be grateful you brought this when you need to make that 1 a.m. trip to the bathroom.
